Spring is definately here. I want to take a moment to showcase some great apparel we have designed and produced in April. From all over, water based screen prints to multimedia laser appliques, we are producing some truely unique pieces.  Remember, you saw it here first. VIP is raising the bar for apparel decoration in 2009!

First we out put the films. These paticular designs are 30″ tall by 30″ wide. The printer we use for films only outputs at 17″ wide max, so I have to tile the films together to get the 30 x 30 final film. We also had to build custom screens and order 25″ squeegees and scoop coater.

Next, we lay the shirt flat on the pallet, making sure to smooth out all the wrinkles. We also use a little spray tack inside the shirt so it does not lift up when you bring the screen up. Sometimes the shirt will stick to the screen, but it usually falls back into place. There are actually pallets you can buy where you can load the shirt like a normal pallet. We have ordered one, so I will give an update once we have had a chance to use it.

Since the screen and squeegee are so big, it takes two people to print the shirt. This way you get good, even coverage on the shirt. This is a good system because after the print, one person can load the next shirt and the other can wipe out the screen. Certain colors of water base ink have a tendency to dry in the screen if you do not wipe it out after every print.

So if you have ever wondered how to achieve these types of prints without a belt printer, this is one way. Through a lot of trial and error we have a pretty decent system that goes faster the more we do it. This type of shirt is very popular and works well with many types of designs. Now, with our laser bridge system, we cut production time in half. All the pieces of twill were cut together with the laser bridge. Then they were placed on the jersey and sewn down with a zigzag stitch.

Distressed applique. Have you heard someone say it and wondered what it was? Chance are you have seen it and not known. Distressed applique is the process of using a laser to cut certain materials so that they fray on the edges, and even more so after they are washed. Designs used with this process often look more vintage, faded and washed out. With the ability to use lighter weight materials, it works great for t-shirts as well as heavier fleece garments.

The kind of material you use will determine the extent of the distressing. Some materials work better than others. In this particular design, we used two colors of cotton twill with contrasting bean stitches. The top layer of cotton twill has letters that are cut off at certain points leaving the bean stitch underneath to finish the letter. You can set the heat and speed of the laser to achieve more or less of the desired effect.  Other good materials to use are denim and t-shirt. Although the t-shirt material does not fray, it has a nice effect for certain styles. With denim, you can also laser etch designs directly into the garment.

Blister Base Ink

If you want something different try printing your shirts with a specialty ink. We offer discharge ink, blister base ink, gel ink, foil prints, water based ink, burn out ink, high density ink and UV ink. If you have seen it, we probably have it. These inks used in conjunction with regular plastosol inks or by themselves create spectacular effects that will turn heads.

Reverse Applique with T-shirt Material

The final look of a decorated piece is usually determined by the material you choose for your applique. If you like the frayed, worn look, cotton twill and denim work great for this. Using contrasting bean stitches is popular with this technique. If you want something that is lighter weight, t-shirt material is a good choice. It also works great for the reverse applique technique. This is where a material is hooped under the garment, then the top is cut through to reveal the t-shirt underneath.
